3 Steps to Practicing Positive Self-Talk

"It's not what we say out loud that really determines our lives. It's what we whisper to ourselves that has the most power."
I don't know about you, but I am constantly talking to myself. Every day, all day. Hmm maybe it's because I don't have any friends (just joking...kind of.) A while ago, I noticed that everything I told myself was negative. "I can't do this" "No one will like me" and so much more. I started to realize, maybe I'm not achieving anything because I'm constantly saying negative things to myself. Believe it or not, what you say about yourself determines how you see yourself and even how others view you. What you say to yourself determines your outcome in life. If your inner conversation is mostly negative, then you will have a negative life. If your inner conversation is hopeful, optimistic and uplifting, you will have a positive life.

Here are 3 steps on how to practice positive self-talk:

Eliminate negative inner self-talk
This is the first step. It can be hard to change to positive thinking, especially if you have a long history of negative self-talk/thinking. By saying "I can't..." you are creating a negative mental block that will prevent you from achieving your goals. Anytime you catch yourself saying “I can’t…”, turn around and challenge your own claim with, “Why can’t I?”

Replace negative influences with positive ones
"The people you surround yourself with influence your behavior, so choose friends who have healthy habits" Be alert to what your negative influences are if they come from certain friends limit your exposure to them as much as you can. Refrain from discussing your plans with people who will be unsupportive of your dreams and goals. Instead, surround yourself with thoughts and actions from people who will empower you.

Focus on the good moments
It is much easier to have a positive attitude if you focus on the enjoyable moments in life rather than the complicated ones. While there will be challenges, you need to remember that life consists of ups and downs and the good times are forged through the bad. Choose to fill your mind with positive thoughts. Make it a habit.

  1. I completely agree with these points! I repeat positive Words to Live By to myself daily to replace the negative thoughts. Great post!
