6 Steps to being more successful in college

We all know that sometimes it's hard to stay on track with school, especially with a job and children. Or because it's just hard.
Here are some things I've learned and practice each day so that I can succeed in college.

Create a schedule
And stick to it! Write down what time and day you need to sit down and do work. I always create a list in Excel of all the work I need to get done. For example, if I have two written assignments due and I've only done one I'll put 1 out of 2 in the written assignments section. I also decide which days I'll work on specific tasks. No, it's not always easy, things come up, life happens but creating a schedule helps so much.

Positive thinking
Thinking negative gets you nowhere. I always used to dwell on the negative things instead of being grateful for the positive things. Surround yourself with positive people. Positive people will help and guide you.

Be organized
Organize your binders, folders, work, desk, EVERYTHING! Go crazy with post its. Being organized helps you find things when you need them quick. Use a planner and only one, so that everything you need is in one place. Keeping your notes organized is also helpful. Use different colored pens for different classes or different sections of your notes.

Motivation
There's a saying that says, " If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." If you aren't motivated, you won't do it, no matter what it is. Some ways to stay motivated is to seek support, learn to say no to options and distractions that deter you from your goals, read inspirational quotes. Take breaks but not long enough for you to forget what your goals are. Most importantly take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health.

Set goals
Start off with small ones. Be sure they are realistic and achievable. Stick with your goals no matter how small or difficult. When setting a goal ask yourself these questions, What is my goal? When do I want to accomplish this goal? What is my plan for reaching this goal? What do I need to do first? Do I need assistance to accomplish this goal? What things can interfere with reaching my goal?  Do I need to adjust my goal? Once you've reached your goal celebrate and start working towards another goal.

Study hard
No one likes to but if we want to succeed we have to study hard. Find what works best for you. Flash cards, different colored pens, a quiet place, listening to music. I personally like a quiet place but sometimes I also like listening to music, I guess it depends. Pick a location and time, study every day but not all day, ask for help. There are lot's of tools to help with studying, Quizlet is a good one that I like to use. When you graduate and have a degree, it's so worth all the studying and hard work.
